What is Influenza?

Influenza is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system, including the nose, throat, and lungs. Multiple strains exist, including influenza A, B, and rarer types like C. The flu spreads easily and is most active during the fall and winter.

Common symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, and coughing. Specific symptoms such as those of influenza B virus can sometimes mimic other respiratory illnesses, making proper diagnosis crucial.

Different Types of Influenza

Influenza A and B:

  • These are the most common flu types that cause seasonal epidemics.
  • Influenza A is known for its ability to cause pandemics and spread via respiratory droplets.
  • While less severe, influenza B is still highly contagious and often impacts younger populations.

Symptoms of Influenza A and B include:

  •   High fever
  •   Sore throat
  •   Fatigue
  •   Congestion or a runny nose
  •   Persistent coughing

Differences Between Influenza A and B:

While type A flu can spread from animals to humans, type B flu only spreads among humans. Flu symptoms of influenza B tend to be less severe compared to influenza A symptoms, but both types can lead to serious complications if untreated.

Causes

Influenza is caused by viruses classified as influenzavirus type A or B. These viruses spread through respiratory droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. The incubation period for flu B and A typically ranges from 1 to 4 days. Both influenza B and A are contagious during this period, even before symptoms appear.

How is it Diagnosed?

Diagnosing influenza involves a physical exam, patient history, and tests such as:

  • Rapid Test for Influenza: Provides quick results for flu type A and B symptoms.
  • Molecular Tests (RT-PCR): Confirms the specific type of influenza, whether influenza A, B virus flu, or a rarer strain.
  • Testkit Influenza: Available for on-site testing at RapidCare Emergency Room.

How is Influenza Treated?

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the flu:

  • Antiviral Medications: Drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) are effective for influenza A and B treatment, reducing symptoms and the duration of the illness.
  • Symptom Management: Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications for pain and fever.
  • Flu B Remedies: Steam inhalation, warm fluids, and adequate rest.

For more severe cases, such as complications from the influenza B virus, treatment at our ER may include IV fluids, oxygen therapy, or hospitalization.
